Back in the day you couldn't get a job as a Web Designer if you didn't know how to write HTML "by hand." Web design software wasn't very good so you needed to know HTML cold.
Now if you can use an HTML editor you can do almost anything you need. And only rarely do you have to "adjust" the HTML.
