By now, many people know that you must build a niche website if you are creating a small business or hobby site. If you don't build a niche website very few free visitors from the search engines will ever see it. If you have a limited amount of time, it's important that you choose a small tight niche. Why? Because the larger the niche the more work it takes to master it on the web.
Not sure what niche you will use for your business or hobby website? Here are some steps to help you figure it out.
1. Create a list of potential site subjects. If you are creating or redesigning your business site create a list of subjects that are related to your business. If you are creating or redesigning your hobby site create a list of subjects that you personally are interested in. Get at least 10. Get away from the list for a while. Come back later and add some more subjects.
2. Now pick the top 3 subjects from the above list.
3. Now choose THE best of the 3 subjects by asking yourself these questions about each of them:
The questions above should help you sort out which one of your final 3 subjects is the niche you will choose. If you are still having trouble deciding on your niche see below.
One way to help determine if other people are interested in a niche is to use the Google Adwords tool. This tool is meant to be used to help a company decide what search terms it should advertise on (on Google). You can use it to see what people are searching for in your particular subject and to see how many searches are being done for those keywords.
This will bring back a list of keywords. Notice the number of keywords, the more keywords the better. Notice the search volume, the more searches the better. Do the same for each of the 3 subjects you chose above.
You should be able to get an idea of which subject is being searched for the most. This will help you to understand which of your three subjects captures people's interest the most and which has the most money making potential.
As an added bonus you can use any of the keywords of your chosen niche as the topic of one of your website's pages (Use only the keywords that make sense for your site).
